Short answer: For many Windows 11 home users, Microsoft Defender is a sensible starting point. It is included with Windows, provides real-time malware protection and works with the operating system's broader security controls. You do not automatically need a paid subscription just because an ad recommends one.
What Windows 11 already includes
Microsoft Defender Antivirus scans for malware and is integrated into Windows Security. Windows also offers a firewall, security updates and protections that depend on your settings and Microsoft account. To find the status, open Start, search for Windows Security, and inspect Virus & threat protection.
Even a strong antivirus cannot fix every risk. Avoid untrusted downloads, keep browsers updated, use a password manager and enable multi-factor authentication. A backup plan matters because malware protection is not the same thing as being able to restore lost files.
What the independent Windows 11 test says
AV-TEST evaluated the most up-to-date publicly available versions of 15 home products in July–August 2026. Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 scored 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability. TotalAV 6.6/6.7 received exactly the same three category scores. This is evidence that both performed strongly in that test round, not proof that a paid solution is always better.
Evidence, not marketing: Microsoft Defender and TotalAV each scored 17.5/18 in the referenced AV-TEST round. See the original published lab table.
When staying with Defender makes sense
You maintain one personal Windows 11 computer, keep updates enabled, rarely download unknown software, use browser protection and do not need the specific extras of another suite. If that sounds like your situation, a new subscription may offer limited additional value relative to its price.
When extra software can be worth considering
A separate suite may be useful when you need a different security interface, additional web tools, more centralized account management or licensed protection across several supported devices. But check which capabilities really apply to your operating system and chosen plan. Marketing pages often describe bundles whose components are not included in every subscription.
Paid antivirus is not a substitute for account security, software patching or backups. It is better viewed as an optional layer selected for its specific features.
Five practical checks you can do today
- Open Windows Security and confirm that antivirus protection is active.
- Run Windows Update and install security patches.
- Enable multi-factor authentication on email and financial accounts.
- Review browser phishing and malicious-site warnings.
- Back up an important file and verify you can restore it.
Should you switch to TotalAV?
Decide only after comparing the current Windows plan with your needs. TotalAV documents malware scanning and web-threat protection, but platform coverage, bundled features and renewal prices depend on what you purchase. If you are perfectly happy with Defender and do not need the additional tools, staying with Defender is a legitimate conclusion.
