How we evaluate security tools
A transparent look at our editorial criteria, source quality, commercial relationships and what this site does not claim.
We begin with the problem, not a winner
Antivirus, VPN and backup subscriptions address different risks. Our recommendations are based on the intended job, supported devices and documented provider functionality. We do not publish our own security benchmark scores or claim that paid placement determines the best antivirus. External customer-review ratings and independently published laboratory results displayed on comparison pages are attributed to their named sources and should not be confused with product recommendations made after our own testing.
What we look at
- Fit for the task: malware defense, connection privacy or file recovery.
- Documented functions: real-time protection, browsing tools, encryption, backup, versioning or recovery where stated by the vendor.
- Device coverage: Windows, Mac, iOS and Android compatibility, with attention to different plan and platform limitations.
- Billing clarity: subscription term, introductory price versus renewal charges, cancellation path and relevant refund rules.
- Limitations: what the tool cannot reasonably be expected to do.
Evidence and limitations
Product descriptions on this site are based on official vendor pages and documentation last consulted on November 3, 2026. We have not run our own antivirus detection benchmarks, conducted VPN speed or logging audits, or tested every backup restore scenario. We do not represent features as independently verified security outcomes.
External company-level customer-review ratings on comparison cards are attributed to the dated public review sources linked beside them. The figures are snapshots, not a test of malware protection or an endorsement by that review platform. Product positions on our comparison page are commercially selected and identified as such; independent AV-TEST scores are displayed separately and relate to the stated product and testing round. We do not invent user ratings, security performance results or award badges. Product features can change and individual checkout offers may differ. Vendor statements should be checked again at the time of purchase.
Our commercial relationship
We may receive commissions on qualifying sales made through sponsored links. Our paid affiliate products currently include TotalAV, PCProtect, TotalVPN and TotalDrive, which are associated with the Total Security corporate group. Our antivirus comparisons also mention non-affiliate alternatives including Norton, Bitdefender and Microsoft Defender; no commission is assumed for those ordinary links. This is not an exhaustive or independently tested ranking of the entire US security software market.
A commission opportunity does not constitute a technical test result. If your needs are not met by the products shown, you should consider other products and the security already included with your operating system.
How our product finder works
The product finder uses only the answers you select about security goals, devices and priorities. It offers a starting point within our limited partner catalog. It does not access your device, scan for malware, assess private data or compute a security score.
