CONSUMER SECURITY GUIDE

VPNs explained: privacy without the hype

Understand what an encrypted VPN connection does, what it cannot do, and which questions to ask before subscribing.

Virtual private networks are often marketed as all-purpose safety tools. In reality, a consumer VPN solves a more specific problem: it creates an encrypted connection between your device and the VPN provider, which can help shield traffic from people observing the local network.

When can a VPN be useful?

Public Wi-Fi in airports, hotels or cafés is a common use case. A VPN can reduce the visibility of your traffic to other parties on that network. It can also make services see the VPN server's IP address instead of your direct connection's address, although websites may still recognize you through logins, cookies and browser identifiers.

What a VPN does not do

  • It does not replace antivirus scanning or remove malware from a computer.
  • It does not make you completely anonymous or eliminate tracking by logged-in accounts.
  • It does not prevent every phishing attack or make unsafe websites trustworthy.
  • It does not guarantee access to every streaming service or location-dependent site.

Privacy reality: You are moving some trust from a local network provider to the VPN operator. Read the VPN service's privacy policy and account terms before purchasing.

How to evaluate a VPN subscription

Connection security

Look for documented encryption, supported protocols, DNS/IP leak prevention and a kill switch that helps stop traffic if the tunnel unexpectedly drops. Check which features are available on your device.

Devices and reliability

Check the supported operating systems, number of devices, regional server availability and any trial or refund conditions. If you need a particular country or streaming platform, confirm current availability rather than trusting a general claim.

Billing transparency

A low introductory price may be followed by an automatic renewal at a regular rate. Read the checkout carefully and understand how to cancel future renewals.

Where TotalVPN fits

TotalVPN documents encrypted connections, DNS/IP leak protection and a kill switch on supported platforms, along with desktop and mobile apps. It is a candidate to compare for travelers and people using shared networks. We have not independently tested its throughput, privacy practices, jurisdictional protections or streaming performance.

VPN questions answered

Will a VPN protect me from viruses?

No. VPN connection encryption and malware scanning are different functions.

Will a VPN make me anonymous?

Not completely. Sites, applications and accounts can still identify you through logins and other methods.

Do I need a VPN at home?

It depends on your privacy goals and network trust. Many websites already use HTTPS, and a VPN is an additional choice rather than a universal requirement.
